Syed Rizwan Ali Shah

More than 34 years of well-rounded experience, mostly in senior management positions.  Over 18 years spent in the power sector in Pakistan, of which nine years at the helm of various IPPs, obtaining a fairly good understanding of all aspects of IPP operations and issues facing the sector including IPP-off taker relationship, power shortages, tariff calculations, need for efficiency improvements, line losses, fuel availability, need for conservation and financial crunch facing the off-taker with its impact on circular debt. Had a hands-on approach to all operational and administrative matters of the various power plants under jurisdiction.

Major positions held included:

  • Chief Executive Officer of Kot Addu Power Company Limited (“KAPCO”), the largest Independent Power Producer (IPP) in Pakistan (name plate capacity of 1600 MWS) for two years.
  • Principal Officer of El Paso Corporation (“El Paso”) in Pakistan for over seven years.  As Principal Officer of El Paso, remained the Chief Executive Officer of El Paso Technology Pakistan (Pvt) Limited, an Asset Management company and simultaneously CEO, Saba Power Company Limited, a 125 MWs (net) RFO based steam power plant; Vice President of Habibullah Coastal Power Company Limited, a 129 MWs (net) combine cycle power plant; and a Director on the Board of Directors of Fauji Kabirwala Power Company Limited, a 150 MWs (net) combine cycle power plant (all these plants had major El Paso investment).
     
  • Senior management positions in the Public Sector for nine years. Significantly in this respect, remained the General Manager Finance/Corporate Finance (Power) of the Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority (“WAPDA”) for around four years, General Manager in Heavy Mechanical Complex, Taxila for three years and Head, Corporate Planning, Millat Tractors Limited.
     
  • Managing Director, Sayyed Machinery Limited for six years.
     
  • Worked in the United States for four years with Rockwell International (a Fortune 50 Company)

Strong academic credentials include a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore in Sep. 1974 and an MBA from Indiana University at Bloomington, Indiana, USA in May 1978, majoring in Corporate Finance.  Graduated amongst the top 10% in the class. Member Beta Gamma Sigma Business Honorary Society. Registered with the Pakistan Engineering Council as a Professional Engineer.
